Trout Fishing

Brook Trout

Trout fishing is what fly fishing is made for. Here in New York we have more than our share of famous trout water. I have spent more than my share of time fishing these waters. One of the big secrets in this state is that we have plenty of trout streams and rivers that fish as well as our famous Beaver Kill. These days, this is where I spend my time, less fishing pressure, good access and lots of trout to fish for. We have several trout streams and one spring creek within two hours of Rochester.

Trout Fishing

We have plenty of wild trout to fish for. Two of the trout streams near Rochester are wild trout streams. Oatka and Springbrook. Oatka has 2 miles of catch and release water. This special regulation water is located in the heart of the wild trout section of this creek. Here you'll find the hatches are as good as any famous trout stream in the State of New York. What makes Oatka work is all of the springs located along the creek and Springbrook which flows into Oatka. With of the help from the springs, Oatka will get low during dry summers but the trout will always thrive.

Spring Brook Brown Trout

Spring brook is like no other Spring brook. This creek has only trout in it. There are no other types of fish in the brook. The trout population in spring brook will rival any Western spring creek. The last thing a trout needs to worry about in this brook is food. Spring brook his excellent sulpfur, and B.W.O hatches and the full array of midgets, ranging from size 20 to 32, and a large crop of scuds and caressed bugs for the trout to feed on. With all this food available, you can imagine how picky these trout can get. Add to this the fishing pressure. I described the fishing pressure as skilled pressure. The trout knows the game. This is technical fishing, with both Midge and may flies. Nothing changes when it comes to dry fly fishing. The trout fishing skills you can learn here will pay huge dividends where ever you go to fish.

Genesee River Trout Fishing

The Genesee River at Wellsville, N.Y on down river this river is about two from Rochester. I described this part of the Genesee River as a second Beaver Kill. The trout in this river are stocked with one and two-year-old trout. Some years, the Genesee River water conditions will be good enough to carry over most of the trout. So, it is not unusual to catch trout over 16 inches. By the time I start fishing this section of the river, all the stocked trout are looking and acting just like wild trout. The real secret of the Genesee River is the trout themselves. This river does not have the big hatches. When the bugs do hatch, the trout will take full advantage of the opportunity. Because of the head start in life from the hatchery, the Genesee trout are surface feeders, making the Genesee River the best dry fly river I know of.
